DOES THE SEASON/TIME CHANGE AFFECT ALZ PATIENTS?

Alzheimers is a rough ride! Mom and I had a terrible summer; she has become very needy, clingy. I have had to take on a second part time job because being a caregiver is expensive. Mom has been in a decline and I have hired people to come in and talk to her a couple of times a day. These people have to be paid. She enjoys their company, but forgets what they said and did and it's back to the same old thing every day. She's bored. I'm stressed. Does anyone know anything about sundowning? We are going through this again and I think it has something to do with the change in light, shortening of days. I wonder if a SAD lamp might help? I've had NO LUCK getting to the "Experts" to pose my questions, so I'm hoping someone out there has had some experience with this. Kathryn

Hi Kathryn...my mother also experienced "sundowning" for a time. Her anxiety increased as the sun went down. She also continually expressed a desire to "go home", or waiting at the front door for her father to pick her up. One way we dealt with it was to close the blinds and curtains prior to the sun setting, and increase the amount of light in the house. Believe it or not, this seemed to work to reduce the behaviour to a more manageable level. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Kathryn

Thanks again for telling everyone your story and I am sorry about what you are going through with your mother right now.
I have hear of sundowning, I will find out some more info for you. As for ask the experts, that section should be called something else right now and we are trying to fix it. You see this website is really only myself and a few others who are running it and until we get some support from a larger organization, there is only so much we can do. We hope to have full time experts answering questions, but like I said we don't have the support right now!

I will get back to you soon.
