My mother at the age of 53 was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. It has been a difficult, gut wrenching couple of years. Today, at the age of 59 after an exhausting 6 yrs as caregiver my father has placed her in long-term care. I live in Ottawa and they live in New Liskeard and wish I could be there to offer him comfort in this time of sorrow. My mother's biggest fear was to be alone and now to know that she is all alone in an extended care facility without any one giving her the one-on-one attention she has been used to torments all of us.
My father is just physically and emotionally exhausted. We (my siblings) support his decision 100%. We can't begin to understand the pain/sadness/guilt he is trying to come to terms with. If anyone can help us during this transition, I welcome any words of support. |
