My Story

My father is and 86 year old widower who still lives on his own. He has always been an extremely proud (bordering on arrogant) yet insecure man. His cognitive abilities began to decline about two years ago but sadly Dad would not discuss any of it. He made excuse after excuse and became angrily defensive if you even attempted to broach the subject of his memory problems. For two years, he has continued to decline into an almost constant state of confusion and denial. The Ministry of Transport however felt that he still has the ability to drive and renewed his license for another two years in May. He cannot comprehend anything new, forgets recent and even long term memories, cannot finish sentences, struggles to find words and often substitutes wrong titles and names. He forgets birthdays and even special occasions. He cannot understand his banking or any financial issues but continues to make these types of decisions. He has also recently left the house without locking doors and frequently turns on the wrong burners on the stove. He hears sounds/voices that aren't there, has lost his sense of smell, drools and has recently begun to make up events that never happened but still insists they did. One recent "story" has led to him shunning his granddaughter and refusing to see her - because of a so called "discussion" - that never took place. She is devastated. I have contacted my local alzheimer's association for help but from everything I have heard and read, without my Dad's willingness to get help - I am out of luck. I do not have any Powers of Attorney and at this stage have been advised by my father's lawyer that based on my father's mental state, even if he would agree to a POA, it wouldn't be considered valid. On a visit to his doctor in April, I attempted to have my Dad assessed for any kind of cognitive impairment but was advised by my father's doctor that the request would need to come from my father. (clearly not going to happen) I am looking for any kind of advice as to how I might get help in getting help for my Dad. I continue to watch and worry but I feel helpless. Thanks for listening.
