My Story

So this is my story. Two years ago we lost my mom to her long battle with breast cancer and my dad asked my husband and myself to move in with him. Since then we have noticed the decline. He forgets the names of things..he will come and wake us up in the middle of the night thinking it is daytime....forgets the answer to the question you just answered. We have taken him to the psychiatrist and he has checked him out and put him on antidepressants and we have another appointment coming up in a week (will be a year since the last one) so we can see if there have been any changes. We have contacted the Alzheimers Society and gotten information from there. We have made contact with Community Care and they have a file set up for when we need some care. So hopefully we are headed on the right track but somehow it feels like something is missing and I am not sure what it is. I am the only one left in my family besides my dad so when decision time comes it is going to be really hard. I am so grateful and thankful I have the husband I have. He looks after my dad and does such an awesome job at it . It makes life more bearable. So I am really looking forward to this site with all the information and hopefully good friends I will be able to make on it .

Well I must say it has been a long long time  since I have left a blog here....have been keeping very busy with dad is the only reason I can really give you. Everyday seems to have the same routine with the odd change here and there but basically every day is the same. Get up and have coffee..Watch tv until after 1 pm...go collect the mail and go out for coffee...come back and watch tv....I will make dinner...my dad will lay down 3-4 times...then we have dinner and dad goes to bed for the night...this is usually 5:30 pm and my husband and I go downstairs to our sitting room...were we watch tv or go on our computers or whatever until bedtime and then off we go....some nights dad will come and wake us up anywhere between 130 and 330 am ...thinking it is morning already...and some nights we are able to get a full nights sleep. Then back up at 730 and start all over again...Putting dad on Aricept I think helped a bit but you could see he was still going down hill....he never got to the point where we had to bring someone in....nor did we have to place him anywhere....my husband would have his days when he would get frustrate but like I said....he only had 2 days to  look after him and then I was home...and that would help him out...he didn't quite have the patience that I had....we made it through Christmas ok,,,no problems there...and in feb my niece and her boyfriend came out for a few days...that threw dad off a bit as it changed his schedule a bit and he didn't like that....it made him grumbier and withdrawl into himself a little more...the one thing we did find is he was getting quieter and quieter...he rarely spoke ,,,,,once in a while you could get him talking but not often....so surprisingly he had a good visit with his granddaughter but was happy once she left.......It is with much sadness I have to tell you we lost my dad on Feb 10th, 2013. He wasn't feeling good when we went to call him in the morning and we thought by his actions he had had a stroke....we took him into the hospital and they said he didn't have a stroke but he was very dehydrated and put him on fluids...they felt his kidneys weren't working properly and he was having problems maintaining a decent blood pressure....I stayed with him all day in the hospital..and about 10 pm my husband came to take me home as they wanted to keep dad in for a few days...he seemed fine...kissed him goodnight said I love you and will see you tomorrow and everything was fine....we left the hospital and got home.....the phone rang at 1132 and it was the dr saying dad had a heart attack and passed away at 1123 basically right after we had left.....so we picked up my daughter and turn around and went back to the hospital...seeing him lying there was so surreal...it was so hard to believe...I had just left him an hour ago and he was sick but doing ok...my heart is broken that he is gone but I am glad he didn't have to suffer any further into the world of dementia...and now he is back with my mom who had passed with cancer 3 yrs ago and my sister who had passed 7 years ago of a diabetic induced heart attack....I am the only one left of our original family and that is sad and lonely...but I will survive....thank you for being here!!!!!!!
