Hi, I,m Brian, 56 years old, and my spouse Susan has been diagnosed with Alzheimers (or whatever Dimentia) since about a year and a bit; but showed symptoms well before that.
Reading what is available I would consider her as a beginning level patient; still quite functional but with limitations (problems with numbers, searching for words; short term memory, etc, you know the drill!).
I was in denial for quite a while but soon realized I would have to face reality and prepare myself for the long road ahead. This site is a first step in that direction. I also realized that I just can't handle the stress by myself; appearing to be strong while falling apart inside. After all my years of work; retirement isn't going to be quite what I had in mind. But I'm determined to make the best of it, and enjoy whatever good days, months or years we have left.
So what I'm looking for is support for my beginning journey as a care giver. I have boig decisions to make soon; like when do I retire so I can share some good times. It's a bit early; but I don't want to leave it too late and blow any chance of enjoying at least a few trips, or whatever while she is in good shape.
I look forward to meeting people who are at the same level as me, or a bit ahead; but not at the later stages yet.
